National Staff Competencies

National AfterSchool Association - Core Knowledge and Competencies for Afterschool and youth Development Professionals.

The National AfterSchool Association (NAA) partnered with the National Institute of Out-of-School Time (NIOST) to conduct research and make recommendations for the Core Knowledge and Competencies for Afterschool and Youth Development Professionals. This nationally recognized guide was created in an attempt to bridge the disparate competency frameworks developed by many states and localities, as well as to “identify consensus about core knowledge and competencies, and generate a unifying force for the professional development of a diverse field.”

National AfterSchool Association - Core Knowledge and Competencies Self-Assessment Tool

The Core Knowledge and Competencies Self-Assessment Tool is designed to empower you to assess your knowledge and skills. It allows you, as a group leader, youth worker, or other youth development professional to:

• Assess your level of knowledge and skills in each one of the ten content areas.
• Identify specific areas of need for your future profes sional development.
• Plan specific actions that will lead to improvement.

This Self-Assessment Tool may also be used by administrators and supervisors to guide staff evaluation, assessment of skills, and professional development needs.

School’s Out Washington – Youth Work Core Competencies: A Review of Existing Frameworks and Purposes

The frameworks used in this report represent a subset of the multitude of Core Competency frameworks that were being used and developed in states and localities across the country. This report also includes the review frameworks that are currently used by large groups of professionals working in the state of Washington, acknowledging that any new overarching statewide framework should build on what is currently in use.
