Course Descriptions

The OSTRC Academy is a special workshop series that covers a range of professional themes and is available to all staff in the DHS OST Network. Participants are actively engaged in a variety of learning activities designed to enhance their professional development competencies and abilities.

Below are descriptions (in alphabetical order) of all the OSTRC Academy workshop sessions available this year.

Funding and Sustaining OST Professional Development
While many OST staff know the value of professional development, it is often difficult to convey this value to funders, policy-makers, and other stakeholders. This workshop will provide an overview of OST PD, its importance to the field, its challenges, and tips on how to use research, evaluation, and other evidence to garner support for these efforts.

Target audience: Administrative and direct-service staff with fiscal responsibilities at their respective organization

Introduction to OST Resources
This session will introduce the variety of professional resources available to OST staff.  In addition, the OSTRC will provide an overview of the local and national out-of-school time (OST) landscape, and share information about the diverse organizations that support youth development in the city of Philadelphia.
Target audience: Administrative and direct-service staff who are new to their jobs, new to Philadelphia, or new to OST

Making the Most of Networking
Professional networking is an important but sometimes overlooked component of OST staff development. The OSTRC will explore networking strategies and provide tips, role playing opportunities, and tools to enhance staff’s comfort and confidence with this professional skill. In addition, the OSTRC will share information about several networking events in the Philadelphia area.
Target Audience: Administrative and direct-service staff who are new to networking

Managing Adult Learners
Do you have difficulty managing the adult learners in your OST PD wokrshops? Do some participants demand all of your attention, while others arrive late, text, doze, or seem otherwise disinterested? This workshop will utilize research on adult learning, as well as personal experiences, to address many of the challenges (and rewards) of conducting workshops for OST staff.
Target Audience: Administrative staff such as PD providers, individual trainers, and PD evaluators

OST PD Showcase
This workshop will highlight exemplary organizations that support and enhance OST professional development in the Philadelphia area. All presenters will provide current information that will benefit and inform the audience and the youth with whom they work. Participants will also discuss and explore professional development relevant resources, activities, and strategies to support their goals.
Target Audience: Administrative and direct-service staff

Promising Practices in Professional Development

For the past twelve years, the OSTRC has evaluated OST professional development (PD) opportunities such as workshops, networking events, and conferences.  The OSTRC staff will share lessons learned from past PD evaluations as well as activities to engage participants, research regarding adult learning, and survey tools to collect feedback from participants and other stakeholders.
Target audience: Administrative staff such as PD providers, individual trainers, and PD evaluators

Standards and Certifications for OST Staff
As out-of-school time gains traction as a field, more attention is being paid to growing and supporting youth work professionals. The OSTRC will share current resources used to frame and improve youth work, such as the National Afterschool and Philadelphia OST Staff Competencies, and discuss career pathways, goals, certifications, and opportunities.
Target audience: Administrative and direct-service staff

Surveys 101
Surveys can help determine staff needs, measure the impact of professional development, and provide evidence of success to administrators, funders, and other stakeholders. This workshop will review types of surveys and cover the basics of how to design survey questions.  The OSTRC will also discuss promising practices for analyzing, presenting, and applying survey results.
Target Audience: Administrative staff such as PD providers, individual trainers and PD researchers and evaluators

Technology and OST Professional Development
Are webinars as effective as person-to-person workshops? Is there an optimal length or frequency for electronic newsletters? Are participants as likely to complete online as paper surveys? This workshop will review the infusion of technology into OST professional development and explore its benefits, drawbacks, and optimal utilization.

Target audience: Administrative and direct-service staff
